Description

The cheerful Black-eyed Susan (rudbeckia hirta) is a common sight in many wildflower prairies; in early summer SBF’s natural meadow is covered with the bright yellow 2-3 inch blooms! Some flowers will even have petals with hints of maroon toward the center adding to the appeal. Native to most of North America, this biennial or short-lived perennial will reseed readily so best planted where baby BeS’ will be welcomed. Would also work well in a porch planter since it is low maintenance and very drought tolerant. Birds and pollinators love it! Also great as a cut flower for bouquets.

Planting tips: Deadhead after flowers are spent to encourage repeat bloom. Some afternoon shade will help prolong flowers if planted in containers.
